FAQs

Do I need to buy different sizes of nappies as my baby grows up?

No! Cloth diapers are one size and they will grow with your baby. There are different rise settings that will enable the cloth diapers to grow in length and different poppers or velcro placement to increase the size of the waist. Cloth nappies should fit your baby from birth up to potty training (4.5kg to 16kg). Whilst they are labelled birth to potty nappies, some babies may be too small to fit into them perfectly right at birth. This will depend on the weight and the shape of your baby at birth. To bridge this gap you can opt to go for newborn cloth nappies first and then One Size.

Which detergent should I use?

It is very important you use a NON-bio detergent. The commercial ones which I found reliable were Fairy powder/liquid or Persil. There will be written on the detergent box. Please avoid from using eco-friendly detergent such as the Eco- egg. Keep in mind not to use any fabric softener as this will decrease the absorbency of your nappies by time.

Should I buy velcro or popper cloth nappies?

Some people prefer to use velcro and others prefer poppers. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Velcro nappies are easy to use and more similar to a disposable. Poppers take a bit longer to get used to. However poppers are more durable over a long time and lots of washes, than velcro. When using velcro nappies make sure to attach to the velcro to the velcro tab on the inside of the nappy to prolong its life. Some parents find that their little ones learn how to undo the velcro tabs off their nappies, which makes poppers much better in this case!

What is the difference between a pocket and an All in Two cloth nappy?

A pocket nappy has an opening at the back where you can easily stuff an absorbent insert. At change time, you wash the whole nappy and replace with a new one. Pocket nappies are easy to use, quick to dry and slim fitting. You can also customise the absorbency to suit your needs at any given time of the day- for example, if you are going on a longer car journey, you can add an extra booster into the pocket. They are often one-size, meaning they grow with your baby through to potty training.  Our bestselling brand for pocket nappies is theBaba and boo One size Cloth nappy.  They come in newborn and One Size option with 2 bamboo mix inserts each cloth nappy.

An All-In-Two nappy has an insert, which either snaps or lays inside the waterproof outer cover.  At change time you can switch the wet insert out for a new one and re-use a few times before washing. These nappies are usually slim fitting and are a great option for out and about use as they take up little space in the changing bag.  Our best-selling brands are the CloseParent & Bare and boho cloth nappy brands.  They come with inserts, ready to use.

Should I buy newborn nappies?

This will depend on your preferences. If you wish to cloth diaper right from birth than yes you should consider getting newborn nappies. You can otherwise wait for one or two months using disposable nappies and then switch to cloth diapers once the one size nappy fit your baby. The use that you will get out of newborn nappies will depend on the newborn nappy you choose. Some of them fit until your baby is 4.5 to 5.5kg and others fit up to 6 months.

Do I need to use biodegradable liners?

Biodegradable liners are optional but we do suggest them to parents who are starting out with cloth as they make it easier. Once the baby's poop becomes solid, you may wish to stop using liners and flush the solid poop into the toilet directly. Please note that babies who are exclusively breastfeed have soluble poop and therefore their poop can be put straight into the washing machine, if this does not bother you.

Can I use cloth nappies for the night?

Yes you can! Some nappies are better than others for night time because they are more absorbent. We recommend the Baba and Boo with an added booster , Close Parent with anight time booster . Some babies, especially if they are heavy wetters, may need a fitted nappy desined especially for night time. We highly recommend the Maxi- Night time Petit Lulu Nappy which is very reliable and effective.

How can I get the perfect fit with a cloth nappy?

  • Make sure the back elastic is sitting just above the child's bottom and then lift the front of the nappy forward above the hips and under the belly button.

  • Make sure the leg elastics between the thigh and the nappy are right inside the groin crease. If you can see any gaps, you want to make sure your cloth nappy is a bit more secure so to prevent anything from coming out.

  • The inserts and liners should be firmly secured against the baby and sitting flat with no gaps or parts hanging out to avoid liquid from coming out.

  • Hold the front in place as you stretch the elastic on the wings outward and then bring back towards the waistband to the find the corresponding snap the comfortably meets around the waist. For easier closing at the front, you can opt for the Velcro option.

  • Push the excess fabric between the row of the snaps upward to be tucked flat and neatly inside the shell.

  • Have your nappy tight enough so no liquid escapes, but loose enough that you can slide in a finger.

How much nappies should I have?

We recommend having a set of 15 to 20 diapers. This will allow you to wash two times a week only. However, some people decide to have less cloth nappies and wash more regularly. We suggest that you start slowly and build your set of nappies slowly to make sure that the nappies that you buy are the right choice for you and your baby. We have built up some very effective and affordable starter kits for you to start off with.

Poppers take a bit longer to get used to. However poppers are more durable over a long time and lots of washes, than velcro. What is the difference between bamboo, hemp and charcoal inserts?

You will find that different nappies come in different materials. At Ikkuluriti we recommend using bamboo, hemp and charcoal inserts over microfibre as they are natural materials that will not harm the planet. Moreover, they are superior to microfibre in absorbency. Hemp is the most absorbent out of the three and charcoal the second most absorbent. Keep in mind that the more absorbent a material is, the longer it will take to dry which is why bamboo is the perfect material for daily use. You may wish to have a couple of charcoal and hemp inserts for added absorbency in the nappy. Please note that the cloth nappy will come ready with the inserts inside for you to use.

How do I use cloth nappies when I am out and about?

Using cloth nappies when out-and-about is made simple with our gorgeous range of reusable water-resistant bags, aka “Wet Bags”. These bags are designed to store your baby’s soiled nappies until you return home. Simply remove the soiled nappy from bub, fold up and place inside the bag. The zippered seal will help contain odour and moisture. The Baba and Boo medium sized wet-bags feature dual pockets, allowing you to place clean nappies/clothing in the front pocket, transitioning soiled items to the rear pocket. Our wet-bags feature wrist straps which make attaching them to your pram, travel or nappy bag easy. When returning home, remove soiled items from the wetbag and place in your dry-pail (or optional hand rinse and strain before adding to your dry pail if items are heavily soiled). You may choose to wash your wetbag, otherwise you can also turn inside out to air or wipe down to be able to reuse immediately/next day. To wash your wet bag, simply turn inside out and washing alongside your cloth nappies or add to your regular household laundry load. No tumble dry recommended.
